One of the most crucial aspects of comfortable breast pumping is ensuring you have the correct breastshield size. Just as we prioritize finding the right shoe size for our feet, selecting the right size of breast-shield can make a significant difference in a mother's breast pumping journey.
Spectra Baby has understood this need and designed one-piece breastshields available in a range of sizes to suit all mothers. These sizes are:
But, why is it so essential to get the sizing right? A well-fitted breastshield will ensure optimal milk expression without causing discomfort. The inner diameter of the breastshield should be 3-5mm larger than the size of your nipple before you start pumping. When you pump, you should see movement of only your nipple, and the areola should not be significantly sucked into the breastshield tunnel.
Measuring Your Nipple Diameter: Before choosing a breastshield size, you should measure the diameter of your nipple. Here's a handy reference based on nipple diameter (refer to picture):
When measuring, ensure that you're measuring just the nipple and not including the areola.
If your breastshield fits correctly, you will notice your nipple moving freely in the breastshield tunnel during the pumping session. There should be minimal or no suction of the areola.
On the other hand, if your breast-shield is too small, your nipple will rub against the sides of the breast-shield tunnel, leading to discomfort and potentially impacting milk production.
A correctly sized breastshield is not just about comfort; it's about maximizing milk output, preserving nipple health, and making your breast pumping journey smoother. Always take the time to find your perfect fit with Spectra's range of breastshield sizes. Your comfort and wellbeing are worth it!
